Background Information
In the 1870s, Europe was a financial, political, and religious mess. They were corrupt and were in some deep financial problems. Money was hard to come by, trade wasn’t really very good, and taxes were getting higher. The finance occupation had been taken over by France and Britain, and ever since then, problems had been arising. Europeans were paid more at their jobs than the Egyptians actually doing their work. The educated Egyptians were shocked and angry because they were doing work, being paid less, while the Europeans that just moved there didn’t do much work and still got paid more than them. The fact that the Europeans were getting more money was deducting their own improvement, and caused the Egyptians to get angry. The fellahin (European peasants) were taxed more than they could pay, and hated that the good-for-nothing and wealthy Europeans were getting their hard earned money. In September 1881, the Khedive found supporters and allies to drive the Urabi out of Egypt, and the Urabi refused, causing a revolt from the Urabi.
The uprising started during 1881, but heated tension was growing still before. It was during the summer of 1881 that the Khedive found their Egyptian supporters and allies. They had tried to make the Urabi leave Egypt in September of 1881 although they refused to leave. Then the Urabi started the revolt against the Khedive, had it going for a year, and then the Khedive got Britain to invade and take control. The Khedive had connections and some due favors from the British and the French and they used it on the Urabi in 1882 after having enough of the revolt.
